consolidation – no movement?

Consolidation

The City of Prypiat was built to house the workers of Chernobyl’s nuclear power plant in 1970. The city was planned to be one of the most modern cities in Ukraine with an average age of 26 years.
In 1986 one of the main nuclear reactors failed. The city in this moment had approximately 50.000 inhabitants. Now it is mostly evacuated and lies within the zone of alienation, the 30km zone around Chernobyl’s nuclear reactor. The border is policed by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs. – just have a look at the video besides -

Movement

Even though the area is restricted, there are still some elder and marginalized people living in there. The wildlife includes some interesting species like wolves, horses, or fauna and flora etc.
Visits to the area can be made with an official guide, but are restricted to scientific use. Lately authorities have eased restrictions to get in. For example there was a film production in Prypiat; touristic visits are possible.

Choose a focus as soon as possible on nature, Soviet urbanism or radioactivity. What kind of movement do you propose as a usage for the empty urban structure? What can you physically add to maintain or amplify your suggested movement? Should the border be transformed, and if so – how?

freedom zone

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

abudiswallJerusalem, the divided city, is now even more divided by the constructed wall. The wall cuts through homogenic urban landscape; a number of gates exist, but only a small proportion of the population is permitted to cross. Families are pulled apart without a chance to visit each other and even for the few ‘legal’ crossers of the border, the nuisance and sometimes long waiting periods represent disgrace and nuisance. A timely normalization and removal of the separation wall is not in sight.

In the light of this situation the task is to conceive and design a politically neutral meeting space, where residents from both sides of the wall can meet, talk, relax and practice cohabitation in preparation of a moment when the wall will be removed. The disposable space for the meeting zone is one ha (14.000 sqm).

Assignment:

Conceive installations, activities and spaces which you would welcome in a meeting area like this What kind of architectural form can create a neutral space for the two cultures? Being an Urban Design excercise, focus should be placed on functions, the volume of buidlings and the quality of space space beween them.

Present your idea in 3 sheets A3:

one sheet for development and explanation of the concept
one sheet for plans
one sheet ‘perspective/collage/atmosphere’

Mind the Gap

A one way footbridge is bridging the inhabitant of each country to what they care on the other side. People are steping on their bridge overlooking the second one. It seems to be a mirror of their act. The movement of the bridges creats empty spaces in the three dimensions ; people might realize the gap created. Going down on the foreign side will set off time to mix.
